"The Art of Flying IFR with Situational Awareness" with DPE Doug Stewart ($35)

9:30 AM - 12:00 PM

Upstairs Meeting Room of Dept of Airports at KCMA Airport, 555 Airport Way, Camarillo, CA

$35.00

Wings Program Event #WP0188231

It is critically important for an instrument pilot to stay ahead of the airplane at all times. it requires awareness of a large variety of elements that go beyond just knowing where one is and what is next. In this seminar, Master CFI and DPE Doug Stewart will discuss how he employs many different elements of situational awareness (SA) to drive his IFR best practices. SA is also a critical part of "communicating command". Many instrument pilots relinquish their pilot-in-command authority through the use of improper phraseology. Doug will discuss not only the "how" of maintaining command through standard phraseology, but more importantly the reasons "why" communicating properly will reinforce a positive interaction between the pilot and Air Traffic Control. Although this presentation is focused on instrument flying, there is much that the VFR pilot can learn from it.

Safely maximizing the utility of your aircraft requires an understanding of the complex weather patterns of both summer and winter. This seminar aims to provide the pilot with the knowledge base to deal with weather encountered enroute. The focus is on thunderstorms, icing, and turbulence. Each section begins with a basic overview of the meteorology and then delves into general and tactical strategies for dealing with these encounters. Included is a discussion of how to use in-flight NexRad and DataLink Weather Services
effectively.  Finally, there will be a discussion of the aeronautical decision making process in dealing with inadvertent severe weather encounters. Weather encounters are almost inevitable for cross country flying and this course is designed to give the pilot the tools to safely manage these encounters.

As the FAA implements the Airman Certification Standards to replace the Practical Test Standards, many instructors and applicants have questions about the changes. This seminar will provide a look at how to prepare from the perspective of the Examiner and the Instructor. You will learn key questions that will be asked, insights on how to structure your thinking and how to demonstrate that you have the knowledge necessary to pass the Instrument Practical.

This class is designed for instrument students preparing for the IFR Practical, instrument instructors and instrument pilots interested in refreshing their instrument knowledge.

The presenters share a passion for training pilots and offer a unique, challenging and insightful way to prepare for the Instrument Practical.
